Russia’s Most Beautiful Athlete Varvara Subbotina Talks About the Tougher Aspects of Being in the Spotlight

Russia's most beautiful athlete is an absolute smokeshow.  Her name is Varvara Subbotina and she's a world champion synchronized swimmer.  I have to be honest before stumbling upon this interview she did with a Russian website I had never heard of her.

Much like my pro beach volleyball players, I'm not up on my Russian synchronized swimmers.  Although I am a big fan of Varvara's now.  I'm apparently not the only one.

The 20-year-old revealed that all of the attention she's received as her country's most beautiful athlete has led to some odd behavior from obsessed fans.

- The shocking news of the last days - a stranger is persistently pursuing you . Has it become quieter after posting to Stories?

- Now more people have reacted to it. I exhibited a similar story about a year ago, I was told that "everything is fine, someone is just kidding." But now I understand that this is overstepping the boundaries, I really start to worry.

A lot of people have written to me where I can turn, my acquaintances have friends, relatives, lawyers, who can do this. We discussed it, but I was told: "It will not work to start a case against this person, because there are no direct threats as such." And in Russia there is no article for persecution. This, of course, upset me a little. The fact that I shared this, that so many people supported me, made me happy, it made me feel better. But until the whole situation is resolved, I will remain in constant tension.

- Is the harassment expressed in the sending of flowers and messages?

- It all started with messages that said that the person was delighted with me, that he loved me very much. At some point, they began to write to me a lot of nasty things, I put it in a story, wrote: "Why is there so much negativity in my direction, what have I done to you?" That is, in fact, nothing happened, I did nothing to write so much for me. And the person began to tell me how impulsive and bad I am. Out of my stupidity, I answered him, he said that with my behavior I needed to be treated in a psychiatric hospital. There were a lot of things, I don’t want to tell everything in full.

He began to send flowers now, writes that next month he will be in Moscow, will be there, we will get married and I will be just happy. What to talk about if for two years a person writes that I am his wife and the mother of his children? Well, how? This is incomprehensible to me.

I can only imagine the mess her DMs are in.  It has to be creepy losers hitting on her nonstop.  If her synchronized swimming is half as good as her Instagram game then she'll be on top of the sport for a long time to come.
