The trade for Baker Mayfield undoubtedly made the Carolina Panthers a better team. There's no doubt in my mind he'll beat out Sam Darnold for the starting job and play better than Darnold did at any point last year.
Darnold is trash and the Panthers will win more games with Mayfield at quarterback. At least one sports book disagrees with me. The odds that the Panthers will win anything of significance got worse after the trade.
Via Larry Brown Sports:
Online sportsbook SportsBetting.ag revealed this week the updated odds for the Panthers to win the Super Bowl following their acquisition of former No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield. Interestingly enough, Carolina’s odds are now worse with Mayfield on the roster.
The Panthers were listed at 125-1 to win the Super Bowl before the Mayfield trade and are now listed at 130-1 after the trade. Additionally, the team has seen their odds to win both the NFC (from 50-1 to 60-1) and the NFC South (from 10-1 to 11-1) worsen with the addition of Mayfield.
I'm not sure how that works. Was that draft pick they traded going to contribute this season? Obviously not and Mayfield is better than anyone else on the roster. It seems like this sports book just wanted to make some headlines.
I'll take Baker with something to prove over Darnold any day.
