With all of the drama this offseason surrounding wide receiver Deebo Samuel and his contract situation with the 49ers it's not surprising that he didn't show up for OTAs this week. Head coach Kyle Shanahan is optimistic that he'll attend mandatory minicamp next month.
Shanahan spoke with the media on Tuesday and said he remains confident that the 49ers and Samuel will be able to reach an agreement on a new deal. Samuel, who was huge part of the 49ers offense last season, is entering the final season of his rookie contract.
“Yeah, of course I do,” Shanahan said. I thought that the last time I talked to you guys at draft time. I feel the same if not stronger.”
Things have quieted down a little bit since OBJ dropped the fake news that Samuel was being traded to the Patriots. That doesn't mean Samuel wants to stay in San Francisco and it doesn't mean a new deal will be reached. But it could indicate that the two sides are at least having some conversations.
