An orca named Lolita who has been held captive in the Miami Seaquarium for the last 53 years is getting a second chance at life thanks to Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay. The plan is to return Lolita to her original home in the Pacific Ocean sometime within the next 18 months and Jim is planning on spending around $20 Million to make it happen.
The philanthropist is working on a plan alongside the Seaquariums owner the will hoist the orca out of her enclosure and back to a 15 acre netted area in the Puget Sound area off of Washington state, where the rest of her pod still lives.
The 8000 pound Orca will be lifted into a glass tank by a harness and flown on a large cargo plane 2700 miles to the Seattle airport where she will be loaded onto a truck and set "free".
The billionaire Colts owner spoke about his efforts to save Lolita on The Pat McAfee show last month saying “She’s healthy, I’ve got the money, let’s move her,”. It looks like not all billionaires are bad!
