In one of the more viral news stories of our time, Britney Griner, a WNBA player, smuggled THC into Russia and got 9 years in jail.
People were up in arms and felt it was unfair, begging politicians to trade actual Russian criminals to get her freed because she means so much to America or something.
I don't really get the uproar, the outrage, because she brought THC into a country where it is an illegal substance, which in reality is still an illegal substance in a lot of the world, including the USA on a federal level, meaning you can't come across borders with it and you may get 9 years in US prisons if you do. I mean, I don't know the actual laws, but I know not to smuggle drugs.
You may have seen the movie Midnight Express, or the Claire Danes movie Broke Down Palace, where she brings drugs into Indonesia or Thailand or some other county. This isn't new, they've made movies about the subject since the 70s, so if you're dumb enough to do the crime, then enjoy doing the time!
Anyway, the update is that a Russian court rejected Britney Griner's appeal and her sentence begins now
The US Government is saying she is wrongfully detained, but I don't see how that is the case, but when you have a high profile story, I guess you have to flex political muscles while other drug smugglers around the world rot away!
I guess WNBA players aren't above the law in other countries!
