Payne was shot and killed on May 9 in Orlando, Florida. He was 31 years old at the time.

Authorities said that the shooter “stayed at the scene and was transported to OCSO headquarters where he was interviewed by homicide detectives.”

Lawrence Dority, who authorities identified as the shooter, was arrested on a warrant for first-degree murder and taken to the Orange County Jail.

Apparently, Payne and his girlfriend traveled to the home of Lawrence Dority in an attempt to prevent a domestic dispute, clearly it didn't end as expected, but there is some level of respect warranted for the guy trying to be a hero. There are many reasons for a shooting homicide, rarely are they an attempt to thwart a domestic dispute of another couple.

Payne was the 15th pick by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2014 NBA draft, he was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves the following year. In 2018, he was waived by the Magic and he then spent time playing overseas.

E! News obtained the autopsy report 3 months after the incident and the cause of death was listed "gunshot wound of the arm and chest".
