The 49ers stuck with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo before the 2020 season when it was reported that San Francisco was Tom Brady's preferred free agent destination.

They reportedly stuck with Jimmy G prior to the 2021 season as well.  His former team, the New England Patriots, tried to trade for him prior to the draft.

Bill Belichick offered a second-round pick and the Niners wanted a first-rounder.

From Patriots Wire:

Bill Belichick inquired about Garoppolo before the 2021 NFL draft when both the Patriots and the 49ers selected a quarterback, with New England taking Mac Jones and San Francisco taking Trey Lance. The 49ers traded up with the intention of taking a quarterback. The Patriots, meanwhile, had yet to determine whether they’d take one. So it makes sense that they’d check on Garoppolo. The deal, of course, didn’t get done. Belichick wanted Garoppolo for a second-round pick. The 49ers expected to receive a first-rounder.

Things ended up working out for Tom Brady in Tampa and for the Patriots, who drafted quarterback Mac Jones.  All he's done is beat out Cam Newton and put together a solid rookie season.

Things haven't been quite as rosy for Jimmy G and the 49ers....
