Week 3 in the NFL is officially here and veteran cornerback Richard Sherman remains a free agent. The 33-year-old was charged with five misdemeanors after a domestic incident involving his wife's family back in July.
Sherman says he's ready physically and mentally to play and wants another chance in the NFL. He doesn't want a "momentary lapse in judgment" to keep teams from signing him.
From Pro Football Talk:
“I’ve got a decade worth of résumé that should stand more firmly than a momentary lapse in judgment. I’ve got a decade of character and tape to be judged off of. If you’re judging me off of a momentary lapse, I’m probably not the player for you either way,” Sherman said.
Sherman said he does not expect his legal case to be resolved until after the season, and that he has not heard anything from the NFL about potential league discipline.
In short Sherman wants teams to ignore his arrest over the summer. Which is fair, he does have a decade of character to be judged off of. What teams probably aren't going to be able to ignore is his diminished skills.
Go back and watch the 49ers-Chiefs Super Bowl. He was toasted and buttered during that loss.
