T.J. Watt's standoff with the Steelers is getting really close to affecting the regular season. The star pass rusher wants a new deal and hasn't been practicing with the team as a result.
This is the final year of Watt's rookie deal and he's scheduled to make $10.089 million. Which apparently isn't enough to take the field for the Steelers.
From Pro Football Talk:
With the start of the season less than a week away, Steelers outside linebacker T.J. Watt is still declining to practice.
Watt has been sitting out practice since the start of training camp because he wants a new contract, the Steelers haven’t given him one, and he doesn’t want to risk an injury until he has his new contract in place.
Look I'm not blaming Watt for trying to get a long-term deal. He knows his genetics and knows it's just a matter of time before the injuries start piling up.
At the same time the Steelers know all about those genetics too and are hoping that they can get another season out of Watt before he crumbles into a million pieces.
