Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit has tested positive for steroids. According to reports the horse tested positive for the topical steroid cream betamethasone.
As a result Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert has been suspended by Churchill Downs. If the positive test is upheld by a split sample test then Medina Spirit will be officially disqualified and runner-up Mandaloun will be declared the winner.
Baffert responded to the failed test by claiming he was wronged and that he would be launching his own investigation.
From Sports Illustrated:
"I don't know what's going on in racing right now, but there's something not right," Baffert said in a press conference at Churchill Downs on Sunday morning. "I don't feel embarrassed, I feel like I was wronged. We're going to do our own investigation. We're going to be transparent with the racing commission like we've always been. [...] This horse was never treated with this. He’s a great horse. He doesn’t deserve this.”
Love the move by Baffert. He's going all in as the villain here and is placing the blame on someone else. It's just the thing the sport of horse racing needs.
